Description
Upon arrival at Sohier Park on Cape Neddick I explored various composition of Nubble Light but settled on this final composition because of the attractive foreground and the expected stunning sunrise. A neutral density filter enabled longer exposure times while a split neutral density filter managed the high contrast between the dark foreground and bright sky.
The Nubble Lighthouse, near the town of York and York Beach, was built in 1879 because of many boating accidents in the Cape Neddick area. Nubble Light is also known as The Nubble and the Cape Neddick Lighthouse. The Nubble Lighthouse is a two layer brick lighthouse with a cast iron outer shell to the lighthouse with a red blinking beacon to warn ship captains. There is a walkway between the Nubble Light and the house that was constructed for the lighthouse keeper. It protected the keeper from bad weather when the lighthouse was needed most. Although originally equipped with a bell on the lighthouse that was utilized during bad weather, it now has a fog horn since 1961. The lighthouse is now fully automated. Therefore there is no lighthouse keeper and the US Coast Guard maintains the Nubble Light. The island is owned and maintained by the town of York Maine. The Nubble Lighthouse is best viewed and photographed at Sohier Park on Cape Neddick.
Good light and happy photo making!
