Description
Picturesque New England lighthouse photography image of the historic Gay Head light located avove the beautiful clay cliffs in Aquinnah on the Massachusetts island of Marthas Vineyard. This landscape photo was taken on a late evening and a long exposure setting blurred clouds in the sky conveying sky movement. The shrubs providing a dynamic feel of movement due to the strong winds present at the time of picture taking. The lighthouse is best photographed in the evening; morning light is spectacular too. A polarizing filter and split neutral density filters provides long exposure times for silky water effects, boosting colors, minimizing glare and balancing contrast between a bright sky and darker foreground.
Gay Head Light was the first lighthouse build on Marthas Vineyard and in 1799 the light was turned on for the first time. The light was most likely a spider lamp of several wicks in a shallow circular pan filled sperm whale oil. The first appointed keeper was Ebenezer Skiff. Today the lighthouse is in danger and the National Trust for Historic Preservation named the Gay Head Lighthouse one of America's 11 Most Endangered Places. Efforts are underway to save the Lighthouse and relocate it away from the eroding cliffs. Better get out and photograph the lighthouse soon or there is always the option buy one of my photos on canvas, metal, acrylic or standard photo print.
Good light and happy photo making!
